Demanding clearing sites, such as areas under power lines, the dismantling of hazardous trees in built-up areas and tree felling in densely built yards, place exceptional demands on a machine contractor's attachments. At these sites, trees cannot simply be felled freely to the ground. A conventional energy wood shear is also unsuitable where thick or leaning trunks must be cut without the trunk splitting lengthwise and without damaging the surrounding infrastructure.
A saw grapple designed for precise and clean work combines a strong gripping force, accurate chainsaw cutting and controlled loading. When the attachment runs on a single hydraulic circuit, installation on an excavator or loader is quick and reliability remains high, even in demanding field conditions.
HAZARD TREE CLEARING REQUIRES PRECISION AND CONTROL
In hazard tree removal and urban forest management, the greatest challenge is how the tree behaves at the moment it is cut. Guillotine-based shears that cut by clamping work efficiently on thinner energy wood. With larger, dry or heavily leaning trunks, however, clamp cutting can cause the trunk to tear. This increases the risk of an uncontrolled fall, which endangers nearby power lines and buildings.
A saw grapple equipped with a hydraulic chainsaw cuts cleanly through the wood fibres without putting the trunk under compressive stress. Based on chainsaw technology, the guide bar saws cleanly through even a heavy trunk in seconds. The section being cut retains its structural integrity until it is lifted, so the operator can safely move the cut piece aside or directly onto a transport platform without the risk of the wood splitting mid-lift.

Yard trees & power line clearing
According to studies by forestry research organisations and infrastructure experts, a controlled clamp-and-saw method significantly reduces the risk of environmental damage in built-up areas compared with felling methods in which the tree is dropped freely to the ground. A clean cut also makes further processing and the handling of logs or energy wood easier.
HOW A SINGLE HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT WORKS – EFFICIENCY WITHOUT EXTRA CABLING
Many attachments require several separate hydraulic lines as well as electrical cables run from the cab to the end of the boom. In dense stands or on clearing sites, separate electrical wires and extra hoses are constantly at risk of snagging on branches and breaking, which interrupts work and leads to repair costs.
A grapple solution that runs on a single hydraulic circuit eliminates this problem. The attachment operates via an internal hydraulic valve block that sequentially controls the grapple's clamping, the rotator and the sawing function using only oil flow and pressure. In practice, the operator uses only the machine's standard auxiliary hydraulics, i.e. the pressure and return lines.
TRUE PLUG & PLAY COMPATIBILITY
The single hydraulic circuit system requires no separate electrical cables along the boom arm. This reduces the time needed to switch the attachment between an excavator and a loader to a matter of minutes and reduces hose damage in off-road conditions.
When the grapple grips a tree, its jaws clamp onto the trunk. As the pressure rises to a set level, the valve block directs the oil flow to the saw feed and the bar motor, so the cut is made automatically while the clamping force is at its maximum. The Axer 450 S model, for example, uses this mechanism and delivers excellent performance without additional control units. This makes it easy to move the attachment from one base machine to another.
HANDLING AFTER CUTTING: THE GRAPPLE'S LOADING PERFORMANCE
Once a hazard tree or branches have been sawn through, the work continues immediately with moving and loading the trunk. In the saw grapple, the guide bar and chain automatically retract back into the protection of the frame as soon as the sawing function has finished. The enclosed design protects the saw chain and guide bar from bending and from hitting rocks or other obstacles during stacking.
The protected design reduces the need for blade maintenance and prevents interruptions caused by the chain coming off. The operator can handle the cut timber in the same way as with a standard timber grapple, without the risk of damaging the cutting blade.

Cutting and loading
A well-designed grapple geometry allows both precise handling of individual trunks and clamping of denser bundles of branches. There is no need to change attachments between cutting and loading, which saves time between work phases and increases the overall efficiency of the contract.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SAW GRAPPLE FOR THE BASE MACHINE AND APPLICATION
The key sizing factors are the base machine's weight class, its hydraulic output and the maximum diameter of the trees to be handled. On excavators, the attachment's own weight affects boom reach and the factors limiting the machine's stability, especially when heavy hardwood trunks are handled with the boom at long reach.
On smaller excavators and loaders, a lightweight and compact attachment ensures that the base machine's lifting capacity is used to handle the load rather than just to carry the attachment. Heavier equipment and excavators over 12 tonnes require a more robust frame and greater sawing power so that thick logs are cut without the blade jamming.
In Finnish equipment design, frame structures are manufactured from high-quality special steel. This ensures mechanical durability under demanding loads without unnecessary extra weight, which also reduces wear on the base machine's boom and pin joints over the long term.
A HIGH-QUALITY SAW GRAPPLE IMPROVES THE EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY OF CONTRACTING
In demanding hazard tree contracting, work safety, precision and equipment reliability determine the quality of the work. A saw grapple that runs on a single hydraulic circuit offers reliable cutting and controlled handling without electrical cables or complex valve installations.
AXER SAW GRAPPLES FOR DEMANDING PROFESSIONAL USE
Finnish manufacturer AXER designs and manufactures durable saw grapples (such as the Axer 450 S, 500 S and 650 S) for excavators and loaders of various sizes. The simple design, which runs on a single hydraulic circuit, makes the attachment a reliable tool for professional machine contractors.
